Transportation websites span the gamut from equipment and trucking to railroads and logistics. These sites must market products to customers who need specialized machinery or vehicles and sell services to those interested in moving goods through the supply chain. They must effectively convey the parent company’s expertise, reliability, and innovation to encourage visitors to become customers, and — in some cases — they must allow existing customers to buy or book products and services and track shipments. But how effective are Transportation sites at achieving their primary goals?
We Studied Our Options
To find out, the siteIQ team decided to add the Transportation industry to the 2020 Usability Index so we could identify and evaluate leading sites in this sector. As is usually the case, we researched top-ranking Fortune 500 businesses within the segment. We then conducted preliminary evaluations of their websites to identify candidates for inclusion on the final list.
We Made a Short List
After reviewing the initial results, we decided that 16 sites across four segments would be added to the Usability Index Roster. This includes four sites each in the Railroad, Equipment, Logistics, and Trucking sectors. Specifically, these sites include:
We Put the Finalists to the Test
Currently, the evaluation team is conducting their inaugural review of these sites using the Transportation version of the siteIQ Usability Benchmark, which includes 196 questions that measure website usability from the visitor’s point of view. A second review recategorizes these questions into 16 Usability Dimensions that illustrate how well each website is aligned to everyday user activities and expectations.
We’re Waiting for the Results
Quite honestly, we’re not sure how Transportation sites will do — or which ones will make their way to the top of the rankings. We are, however, curious to see the results. After all, these companies face the daunting task of providing equipment designed for, and transit related to, essential goods that the World relies on every day — so offering visitors an effective and useful website should be a piece of cake… right?
We’ll be publishing overall Transportation results then results for the Railroad, Equipment, Logistics, and Trucking sectors.
