For more than a decade, siteIQ has sponsored the siteIQ eBusiness Index, an ongoing study that benchmarks the performance of leading websites across the IT industry. Each year, our analysts audit and evaluate 20 or more prominent sites on the IT web to assess how well they market and sell their products and provide pre- and post-purchase support for their varied audiences. The overall results of these evaluations are posted to our website, siteIQ.net, and detailed Website Content, Usability, and Performance results are available to our siteIQ Library subscribers.
As announced earlier this year, however, the siteIQ eBusiness Index will be converted to the siteIQ Usability Index beginning with our 2020 evaluations. Consequently, our 2019 audits mark the end of an era — and will be the last time Website Content and Website Performance are assessed.
This summary announces the Search rankings and ratings based on Website Performance, Total Website Content, and Overall Usability scores awarded during our final 2019 eBusiness Index evaluations.
Online search techniques are constantly evolving to support ever-increasing dynamic website design approaches. So the results of our Search Features & Facilities evaluations are typically unpredictable. And, one look at the 2019 Website Performance, Website Content, and Website Usability rosters shows that this year isn’t any different.
In fact, only three of the 25 tracked sites maintain their 2018 Website Performance ranking, four sites’ Website Content positions hold steady, and just one site’s Website Usability scores stand firm. A look behind the numbers reveals that all this maneuvering is the result of a combination of factors including the addition or removal of features that subsequently improved or decreased the usability of search facilities on some sites.
A closer examination of the data discloses, however, that the primary catalyst for the dramatic changes observed in the Search Features & Facilities rankings during our 2019 evaluations are the sweeping changes that the siteIQ team made to the eBusiness Index roster before our 2019 evaluations. This is because these changes — including the elimination of poorly performing sites, the addition of new competitors, and reassigning some sites based on realigned industry parameters — disrupt one end of the rankings to the other.
Case in point, at least two new sites debut in the Top 5 based on Website Performance, Website Content, and Website Usability scores knocking several veteran sites backward — and in some cases pushing them out of the Top 5 rankings altogether. What’s more, expanding this view reveals that Index freshman also claim key positions in the middle of the rankings stealing the spots previously occupied by other Index stalwarts. Finally, a review of the Bottom 5 shows that a handful of newcomers debut in the lowest positions on each list, allowing some lesser performing veteran sites to float up the ranking rosters.
At the end of the day, all this upheaval has an even greater impact on the 2019 Search Features & Facilities results than typical unpredictability factors. In combination, however, these components render findings that are a near-total departure from any of our previous eBusiness Index evaluations.
